Structure and Function of Proteins :
Exercise 10: Structure function relation

The TIM barrel fold.

The classic structural biology paradigm states, that a solved protein structure enables straightforward determination of its biological function at the molecular level . However, accumulated data suggest that although structural data can still provide extremely useful functional insights, structurally related proteins were documented to perform unrelated functions. The TIM barrel fold proteins exhibit functional diversity, mediated by the same structure.

In this exercise we will look at the TIM barrel fold. This one fold has many functions.
We will demonstrate several aspects of the evolutionary relationship between the TIM barrel family members, based on their sequences, structures and functions.
The exercise includes two parts:
  1. Introduction to the TIM barrel fold.
  2. Exploring the evolutionary origin of the TIM barrel fold.
