Mid esophageal pH-metry

The “gold standard” test of GER is pH esophageal monitoring.

The x-ray shows the pH probe in the esophagus.

The ph probe in the esophagus is attached to the pH monitor for a 24 hour period during which infant care is unchanged from normal (i.e. ambulatory test).

The duration of GER, the number of episodes of GER and the pH level in the esophagus during these periods are recorded.  The effect of feeding, medications etc. is noted.  The clinical changes e.g. vomiting, apnea etc. is recorded.
